You have colored your hair and now you need to take care of it. Below you will find some tips and guidance on how to look after it.
First, ask your colorist about a glossy type of shampoo and conditioner that deposits color into your hair.
"A direct pigment shampoo and conditioner adds more color than what you're washing out post your salon visit," explains Candice Wyatt, owner and stylist at Joburg’s Wyatt Hairdressing. "It's a great product to extend the life of your color and should be used for every third wash."
Use A Natural Dye!
Instead of permanent color – which leaves a distinct line of regrowth at your roots, consider a vegetable dye.
"It washes out gradually and if you invest in a color-saving shampoo, you can extend the life of your treatment even further," suggests Wyatt. "Going natural is also ideal if you want to experiment with a darker shade or add tone to your hair," she continues. While you can't go lighter with vegetable dye, you can add richness and reflect (think gold, copper or ash) to your hair.
Swap your regular shampoo and conditioning duo for a color-protecting twosome. We love Pantene Radiant Color Shampoo (R33) and Pantene Radiant Color Conditioner (R48).
Try An Overnight Treatment...
Hydration, repair and protection from future damage are the secrets to vivid color; the best time to apply moisture is while you're asleep to give your product time to set in and penetrate.
Try Frederic Fekkai Advanced Care Overnight Hair Repair (R1830), available at selected Woolworths stores. Worried about waking up to a pillow covered in product? The beauty of this overnight condition fixer is that it absorbs instantly into your hair.
Touch Up Your Roots!
Yes, salon visits are wonderful when you have the time and money. But if you need a color solution fast, opt for an at-home permanent colorant. Try L'Oréal Paris Excell 10' (R135) – it takes 10 minutes to develop!
In addition to using a shampoo and conditioner for color-treated hair, apply a hair mask that contains a cocktail of minerals to strengthen your locks, such as Pro-Style
Aromatherapy Natural Anti-ageing Hair Mask (R100), available at selected Clicks stores, once a week. It will balance and nourish hair as well as target hair loss and premature grey (which means having to color more often).
The key ingredients? Nourishing borage seed oil, amla oil, gotu kola oil and Dead Sea minerals. Another at-home treatment that's great for week-to-week nourishment: GHD Indulgence Treatment Weekly Conditioning Mask (R265 for a box of seven treatments).
